Cook Up Some Fun at One of Orlando's Cooking Schools

If you have some free time during your convention, there's more than one way to stir up some fun. Why not make the most of your Orlando stay with a visit to one of the area's cooking schools? Whether you choose to prepare authentic Asian cuisine to decorate your own candy creations, you'll be delighted by the variety of classes to choose from.

Open for 20 years, Truffles & Trifles is one of Orlando's most well-known cooking schools. Located in historic College Park near downtown Orlando, the school offers a range of classes including those centered around Caribbean and French fare and meals for special events. If you're coming with a group, Truffles & Trifles offers private parties for a minimum of 14 people. Individual classes cost approximately $40 per person, depending on the class you select. If you've brought your sweet tooth to Orlando with you, visit Farris and Foster's Fine Chocolates for their Chocolate Fun Night. Share a pound of chocolate and create your own custom candy, using toppings such as strawberries, pretzels, caramel and marshmallows. Families, individuals and groups can make chocolate creations that are truly delicious. Anything goes at Farris and Foster's, where you can get as creative as you want with chocolate shapes and toppings! Normal price is $20 per person for groups of 10 or more and classes are 7-9 p.m. with reservations required. Farris and Foster's is located in Baldwin Park, near downtown Orlando. For an upscale culinary experience, sign up for the "Gaylord Gourmet" at the Old Hickory Steakhouse, located in the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center. Classes are held periodically and include a cooking seminar and wine tasting. Another culinary seminar titled "Tour de Fromage" features an opportunity to sample exotic artisanal cheeses, paired with wine. If you don't want to participate in a cooking class, but would still like to learn tips from a chef, Roy's Restaurant on Sand Lake Road is the place for you. Classes are held twice a month from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. On the second Wednesday of the month, the class is led by the restaurant's executive chef while the class held on the last Wednesday of every month features the pastry chef. All classes require reservations, which can be made by calling 407-352-4844.

For a personal touch, visit Julia's Gourmet Magic, where you will learn about the art of cooking from Julia Anita, author of three gourmet cookbooks. Each session is themed and varies from exotic choices such as Mediterranean or Indian cuisine or a special "Girl's Night Out" menu. Even better, Julia devises recipes with ingredients that are easy to find and aren't difficult to prepare. She also teaches cooking fundamentals such as tips on storage and cutting. Classes are offered during the day at HADCO'S Culinary Salon, located near Orange Blossom Trail off State Road 528 and night classes are offered in the showroom of Live Gourmet Kitchen Vignettes of Aggressive Appliances near Highway 50. Another restaurant catering to small groups is Ming Court - The Art of Oriental Cuisine on International Drive. With cooking classes running for more than 15 years, this restaurant teaches the art of cooking Chinese cuisine with everyday cooking equipment and ingredients. With classes that are run by the head chefs, you are sure to be in for a treat! The class requires a minimum of 20 people and costs $20 per person.
